Description

Static Electricity, Magnetism, and Cause and Effect Relationships: Third-grade students will love these engaging activities on static electricity! Students will learn about the cause and effect relationship between two objects not in contact with each other. Students will figure out ways to move objects that are not touching. They will ask questions to determine cause and effect relationships. This resource includes five labs to meet the third grade standard for NGSS.

3-PS2-3. Ask questions to determine cause and effect relationships of electric or magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other.

This is from the strand Motion and Stability: Force and Interactions

And also addresses Utah SEEd Third Grade Standard 3.3.4 Plan and carry out an investigation to determine cause and effect relationships of electric or magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other. The students will love these static electricity labs.

This resource includes a slide show that explains static electricity. Students will learn about how electrons move to new objects. They will learn about charge imbalance and that negatively charged objects attract positively charged objects. They will learn about attracting and repelling in both static electricity and magnets. Students will see that objects that are not touching can be moved through static electricity and magnetism. Students will learn about the cause and effect relationships of electric or magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other.

Students will also learn about magnets and how the North and South poles can attract or repel. They will learn that they can move objects they are not touching attracting or repelling with static electricity.

Students will learn that even when objects are not touching each other they may interact through forces such as magnetism and static electricity.

This resource also includes an informational text article and comprehension questions on magnets and magnetism.

My students loved this unit. I was able to present different elements of it throughout the month. It is hard to find interesting non-fictional, age-appropriate text for my students that they will enjoy. This was a great unit that aligned well for my students who have very different goals within the same group.

I am so impressed with this unit which manages to be distance learning and hands-on at the same time.  Really well thought out and engaging activities that allow students to practice each of the eight Science and Engineering Practices.  Really no prep for me!

The elephant article was excellent but I also thought the lab on dissecting a flower was broken down so easily, even telling me where to get inexpensive flowers!  This resource helped me teach this challenging standard in an engaging way.  Worth every penny!
