Description

Students will love learning about earthquakes in this interactive unit. This resource is full of a wide variety of interesting earthquake-related activities. Students will design a solution to reduce the impact of earthquakes on people. This resource includes hands-on activities, lab pages, interactive notebook flaps, nonfiction passages, comprehension pages, a slide show, a WebQuest, sorting cards, QR code research, worksheets, and answer keys! This resource addresses the following standards for NGSS:
4-ESS3-2.Generate and solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans.*

This resource is also aligned with Utah SEEd
Standard 5.1.1 Analyze and interpret data to describe patterns of Earth’s features.
Standard 5.1.5 Design solutions to reduce the effects of naturally occurring events that impact humans.

Concepts are aligned with NGSS Disciplinary Core Ideas from Earth’s History, Earth’s Materials and Systems, Human Impacts on Earth’s Systems, Plate Tectonics, and Large-Scale System Interactions, Natural Hazards, Designing Solutions to Engineering Problems.

There are five pages of informational text passages! This unit is aligned with CCSS for Reading Informational Text for 4th grade, making this an integrated unit on earthquakes. The passages are also aligned with Utah Core standards for reading informational text.

I am so impressed with this unit which manages to be distance learning and hands-on at the same time.  Really well thought out and engaging activities that allow students to practice each of the eight Science and Engineering Practices.  Really no prep for me!

I am so impressed with this unit which manages to be distance learning and hands-on at the same time.  Really well thought out and engaging activities that allow students to practice each of the eight Science and Engineering Practices.  Really no prep for me!   Science and Engineering Practices Distance Education Unit
The elephant article was excellent but I also thought the lab on dissecting a flower was broken down so easily, even telling me where to get inexpensive flowers!  This resource helped me teach this challenging standard in an engaging way.  Worth every penny!

The elephant article was excellent but I also thought the lab on dissecting a flower was broken down so easily, even telling me where to get inexpensive flowers!  This resource helped me teach this challenging standard in an engaging way.  Worth every penny!   Structure and Function NGSS 4-LS1-1 and 4-LS1-2

My students loved this unit. I was able to present different elements of it throughout the month. It is hard to find interesting non-fictional, age-appropriate text for my students that they will enjoy.
