Standard 2.1.3 Design solutions to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of land. Define the problem by asking questions and gathering information, convey designs through sketches, drawings, or physical models, and compare and test designs. Examples of solutions could include retaining walls, dikes, windbreaks, shrubs, trees, and grass to hold back wind, water, and land.
This is such a fun way to apply the standards in a meaningful way.

She showed a map of land changing over time and reviewed how that might happen.
Students see how land shapes have changed over time. The talk about possible causes of this. Great use of phenomena.
Then students are given soil in a tub, a blow dryer, and a cup of water. How can air and water change the land?
Next students are challenged to use materials to STOP the movement of earth by water and air.
Students made retaining walls and planted vegetation to hold soil in place. Then they tested it.
Students recorded their information visually and linguistically.
