Genetic and Environmental Factors for Growth
This unit will help you teach your middle school science class about genetic and environmental factors that influence growth!
This unit will save you TONS of prep time and keep your class engaged!

Genetic and environmental factors play a role in the successful reproduction and growth of organisms. In this unit, students will learn that the growth of organisms and the survival of populations is due to both genetic and environmental factors.

Strategic Notetaking Guide
This unit contains multiple resources, including a PowerPoint slideshow with a strategic note-taking guide, three scenario pages, follow-up pages, making an argument from evidence activity, and a quiz.

Golden Eagle
Students will make a scientific argument based on evidence to support the idea that genetic and environmental factors affect growth and reproduction.
Your class will read facts about three species and determine the genetic and environmental factors affecting reproduction, growth, and survival.

Mule Deer Scenario Page
I used the slideshow along with the printable material to do guided notetaking with my students. The slideshow offered opportunities for interaction and discussion which naturally led to the writing activities in the printed part of the materials.

Thinking About Plants
This unit is aligned with NGSS MS-LS1-5.
You can be sure that you’re covering the information that you need to with this unit!
NGSS MS-LS1-5: Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of organisms. Examples of local environmental conditions could include availability of food, light, space, and water. Examples of genetic factors could include large breed cattle and species of grass affecting growth of organisms. Examples of evidence could include drought decreasing plant growth, fertilizer increasing plant growth, different varieties of plant seeds growing at different rates in different conditions, and fish growing larger in large ponds than they do in small ponds. Assessment does not include genetic mechanisms, gene regulation, or biochemical processes.

Aligns well with standards. Great labs and follow-up pages. Great slide show. Altogether a really great unit that is easy to implement.
