Gravity and Mass Middle School Science Unit – Making an Argument from Evidence NGSS MS-PS2-4

Gravity and Mass in the Solar System

Need a little help covering gravity and mass in your middle school science class?

Did you know there is an interesting relationship between gravity and mass?

This standards-aligned complete unit will help you cover standard NGSS MS-PS2-4 and Utah SEEd 7.1.5, and your students will enjoy the engaging activities!

Students will learn that gravity is a force that attracts and is influenced by the mass and distance of interacting objects.

Constructing Arguments Based on Evidence

Students will construct arguments based on evidence to support the claim that gravitational interactions are attractive and depend on the masses of interacting objects in the MS NGSS and Utah SEEd 7th Grade resource.

This resource aligns with NGSS Middle School Standards

MS-PS2-4.  And also Utah SEEd Standard 7.1.5

Support a Claim That Gravitational Interactions Within a System are Attractive

Engaging in argument from evidence to support the claim that gravitational interactions within a system are attractive and dependent upon the masses of interacting objects.

This is a large unit that can stretch over the course of 11 days if you use the suggested schedule that I’ve included.

The unit begins with a slide show on gravity and includes a strategic note-taking guide.

The unit goes on to have graphing activities, informational text articles, QR code research, and activity for making arguments from evidence gathered.

I am so impressed with this unit which manages to be distance learning and hands-on at the same time.  Really well thought out and engaging activities that allow students to practice each of the eight Science and Engineering Practices.  Really no prep for me!

The elephant article was excellent but I also thought the lab on dissecting a flower was broken down so easily, even telling me where to get inexpensive flowers!  This resource helped me teach this challenging standard in an engaging way.  Worth every penny!

My students loved this unit. I was able to present different elements of it throughout the month. It is hard to find interesting non-fictional, age-appropriate text for my students that they will enjoy. This was a great unit that aligned well for my students who have very different goals within the same group.
