Description

Students will learn about the scale and properties of objects in the solar system by using mathematical thinking in great hands-on labs. Students will analyze and interpret data to understand the properties of objects in the solar system. This resource is aligned with NGSS MS ESS1-3

MS-ESS1-3. Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system. and Utah SEEd 6.1.1 Develop and use a model of the Sun-Earth-Moon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the Sun and Moon, and seasons. Examples of models could be physical, graphical, or conceptual.

Students learn about the size and scale of planets in the solar system. They will gather and analyze data from QR codes, websites, slide shows, and hands-on activities. After gathering data, the students will analyze and interpret data.

This resource includes two labs, a nonfiction article, interactive notebook flaps, a slide show and more. Students will use computational thinking to analyze data and learn more about the properties of the objects in our solar system.

The informational text article is aligned with the CCSS for 6th grade Reading Informational Text. Students love my high-interest nonfiction passages!

The two lab activities included are hands-on, using easy to find materials like string and large paper. Students will learn in a visual way about size and scale and distance in the solar system.

The labs include simple materials such as rope, paper, string, and tape. In these labs, students will create models to help them understand the data better. Students will collect data from reputable websites using QR codes or clickable links. This resource also includes an assessment (quiz) in the style of the end of year assessments. This is a perfect unit for students to compare properties of the solar system such as size and composition. NGSS MS ESS1-3

Science Concepts In this Unit Include:

Distance of planets in our solar system from the Sun

Comparing Sizes of planets in our solar system

Properties and characteristics of each planet

Scale and properties of objects in our solar system

Students will use science and engineering practices.

Analyzing and Interpreting Data.
Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking.
Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions.

MS-ESS1-3. Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system.

This unit is designed specifically to address the concepts in the NGSS MS ESS1-3 standard. I have created resources for all the other standards for NGSS MS ESS1, Earth’s Place in the Universe.

The elephant article was excellent but I also thought the lab on dissecting a flower was broken down so easily, even telling me where to get inexpensive flowers!  This resource helped me teach this challenging standard in an engaging way.  Worth every penny!

It is hard to find interesting non-fictional, age-appropriate text for my students that they will enjoy. This was a great unit that aligned well for my students who have very different goals within the same group.
