Description
This resource is just right for the Sound Vibration NGSS standard. Students will enjoy these activities that help students understand about sound vibration by conducting investigations that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.
NGSS 1-PS4-1. Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make a sound.
1-PS4-4. Use tools and materials to design and build a device that uses light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance.* [Clarification Statement: Examples of devices could include a light source to send signals, paper cup, and string “telephones,” and a pattern of drum beats.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include technological details for how communication devices work.]
This resource also aligns with Utah SEEd Standard 1.3.1 Plan and conduct an investigation to show the cause and effect relationship between sound and vibrating matter. Emphasize that vibrating matter can make sound and that sound can make matter vibrate and that sound is energy.
This resource includes hands-on labs using cup telephones and making sound sandwiches. Students will learn that sound is made by vibrating objects. Students will learn that sound waves travel through liquids, solids and gas. This resource also includes response pages and a quiz.
