Description
STEM Engineering: Criteria and Constraints
Do you need to teach Identifying Criteria and Constraints? This is an excellent unit for STEM Engineering. Students will learn about criteria and constraints and will identify them in three engineering challenges and in several engineering scenarios. Students will compare two engineering solutions to see how well they meet the criteria and constraints. This resource is aligned with MS-ETS1-1 and MS-ETS1-2.
This unit includes:
- A slide show on criteria and constraints
- A strategic notetaking guide
- 3 STEM Engineering Activities (ping pong ball launcher, zipline, and tower)
- Response pages
- A group activity
- Practice Pages for Identifying criteria and constraints
Standards Addressed:
NGSS MS-ETS1-1 Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
NGSS MS-ETS1-2.Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
Teachers love this resource on STEM Engineering: Criteria and Constraints!
Peggy ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Extremely Satisfied
I was delighted to find a unit that really explores the criteria and constraints. I loved that the real-life examples were used.

That is exactly what I was looking for to introduce, teach, and practice criteria and constraints. Students were engaged, and this was easy to implement.
