Description

Can be used as a Distance Learning Packet Weather Activities for Kindergarten is a great unit full of interesting lessons and centers for learning about weather. Students will make observations and describe weather patterns and learn about weather forecasting and preparing for severe weather. Weather forecasts can help us know what to wear and how to prepare for the weather. Students will collect data on local weather and record the results to look for patterns of weather.

This resource is aligned with Kindergarten NGSS:

NGSS K-ESS2-1. Use and share observations of local weather conditions to describe patterns over time. [Clarification Statement: Examples of qualitative observations could include descriptions of the weather (such as sunny, cloudy, rainy, and warm); examples of quantitative observations could include numbers of sunny, windy, and rainy days in a month. Examples of patterns could include that it is usually cooler in the morning than in the afternoon and the number of sunny days versus cloudy days in different months.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment of quantitative observations limited to whole numbers and relative measures such as warmer/cooler.]

NGSS K-ESS3-2. Ask questions to obtain information about the purpose of weather forecasting to prepare for, and respond to, severe weather.*

This resource is also aligned with Utah SEEd for Kindergarten:

Utah SEEd

Standard K.1.1 Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about local, observable weather conditions to describe patterns over time. Emphasize the students’ collection and sharing of data. Examples of data could include sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, cold, or warm. (ESS2.D)

Standard K.1.2 Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information on the effect of forecasted weather patterns on human behavior. Examples could include how humans respond to local forecasts of typical and severe weather such as extreme heat, high winds, flash floods, thunderstorms, or snowstorms. (ESS3.B)

This resource has lots of age-appropriate activities like sorting and making graphs and includes three slide shows. The slide shows are on types of weather, weather forecasting and severe weather. Students will learn how to prepare for severe weather and how to dress for everyday weather events. Students will learn what a meteorologist does and how they can forecast the weather.

I am so impressed with this unit which manages to be distance learning and hands-on at the same time.  Really well thought out and engaging activities that allow students to practice each of the eight Science and Engineering Practices.  Really no prep for me!

The elephant article was excellent but I also thought the lab on dissecting a flower was broken down so easily, even telling me where to get inexpensive flowers!  This resource helped me teach this challenging standard in an engaging way.  Worth every penny!

My students loved this unit. I was able to present different elements of it throughout the month. It is hard to find interesting non-fictional, age-appropriate text for my students that they will enjoy. This was a great unit that aligned well for my students who have very different goals within the same group.
