Earth’s Spheres and Sphere Interaction – 5th Grade Science Unit

Earth's Spheres and Sphere Interaction

If you need a little help covering NGSS Standard 5.ESS2-1, this complete unit will save you time and keep your students engaged!

Students will learn about the Earth’s spheres and sphere interaction by developing a model to show the 4 Earth spheres: geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere interacting. This resource uses the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices.

Earth's Spheres

Earth’s Spheres and Sphere Interaction was designed to cover NGSS 5-ESS2-1.

Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.

NGSS 5-ESS2-1

It also aligns with Utah SEEd 5.1.3.

Develop a model to describe interactions between Earth’s systems including the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere. Emphasize interactions between two systems.

Utah SEEd 5.1.3
Earth's spheres the hydrosphere

This unit explores the Earth’s four spheres ( geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere) and how they interact exchanging energy and matter.

The resource includes an informative slideshow, 3 pages of nonfiction text, response pages with text-dependent questions, interactive notebook flaps, a hands-on lab activity with follow-up pages, graphic organizers, diagrams, and more.

Informational text reading passages with comprehension questions are included.

I loved how well thought through this resource was. My colleagues, parents, and students all loved the Spheres in a Jar project!

This was awesome! I used it as the science curriculum for this unit on the 4 spheres and supplemented with other resources. It was perfect!

I am so impressed with this unit which manages to be distance learning and hands-on at the same time.  Really well thought out and engaging activities that allow students to practice each of the eight Science and Engineering Practices.  Really no prep for me!

The elephant article was excellent but I also thought the lab on dissecting a flower was broken down so easily, even telling me where to get inexpensive flowers!  This resource helped me teach this challenging standard in an engaging way.  Worth every penny!

My students loved this unit. I was able to present different elements of it throughout the month. It is hard to find interesting non-fictional, age-appropriate text for my students that they will enjoy. This was a great unit that aligned well for my students who have very different goals within the same group.
