The NGSS 2nd grade standards state that students should learn to identify landforms and bodies of water and to create a model to represent them.
NGSS 2-ESS2-2
Develop a model to represent the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water in an area.
One of my favorite things to do after teaching students to identify a few landforms is to have them make a model using play-doh
crayons, markers, paper, toothpicks and post-it notes. Students are instructed to make an imaginary land with as many landforms as they can think of.
I like to have students do some reading of nonfiction about landforms.
