Description
Three excellent learning cycles on light written in the 5 e format are sure to engage your students. They are aligned with the first grade NGSS for physical science.
NGSS 1-PS4-2. Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that objects can be seen only when illuminated.
NGSS 1-PS4-3. Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the effect of placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light.
Also aligns with Utah SEEd Standard 1.3.3 Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the effect of materials in the path of a beam of light. Emphasize that light can travel through some materials, can be reflected off some materials, and some materials block light causing shadows. Examples of materials could include those that are transparent (such as clear plastic), translucent (such as wax paper), opaque (such as cardboard), and reflective (such as a mirror).
These are inquiry based, hands-on science lessons using easy to obtain household materials to teach several important concepts about light. Great STEM connection. Created by Lynda R Williams
Geared towards 1st grade but can be adjusted for second grade. This unit includes 3 lesson plans and accompanying worksheets.
