Seed Book out of a Seed Packet-Great Idea for Interactive Notebooks

Want a simple and easy project for interactive notebooks?

Start with a Seed Packet.

Trim the edges at the bottom, right and top of the packet.

Now the seed packet opens like a book.   Place a few of the seeds in a jewel bag and tap inside the book.  The other seeds can be planted.

Now add some paper for recording predictions or measurements of your plants.

When the little book is closed it will look like this
Inside you have room to record observations.

This project can be done independently or in the notebook by gluing it in.

This is best paired with sprouting or planting seeds and watching them grow while recording the results. Students can compare different types of seeds or different soil conditions, water, temperature, etc.

You can have students make a little sprout house and hang it in the window.  Great for sprouting and viewing seeds.
Here is a free Spout House for you to save, print, decorate and use.  Cut the middle out and have students tape a sandwich size baggie behind it.  Place seeds with a few drops of water and a little bit of paper towel.  Watch your seeds sprout and record the results in your seed book!

I am so impressed with this unit which manages to be distance learning and hands-on at the same time.  Really well thought out and engaging activities that allow students to practice each of the eight Science and Engineering Practices.  Really no prep for me!

The elephant article was excellent but I also thought the lab on dissecting a flower was broken down so easily, even telling me where to get inexpensive flowers!  This resource helped me teach this challenging standard in an engaging way.  Worth every penny!

My students loved this unit. I was able to present different elements of it throughout the month. It is hard to find interesting non-fictional, age-appropriate text for my students that they will enjoy. This was a great unit that aligned well for my students who have very different goals within the same group.
