STEM Engineering Projects for Distance Learning

STEM Engineering Practices for Distance Learning

 Are your students Distance Learning but you still want your students to have hands-on STEM activities?

   You, students, can still do STEM engineering activities at home with a little guidance online. Focus on simple, easy to find household materials and allow them to substitute materials for something they have on hand. STEM engineering might be just what the students need right now. They will think critically, problem-solve, and do something with their hands!
     Students will love this STEM Curriculum that is designed for Distance Learning. Students can use the design process and their STEM Engineering skills to create something for each of the 13 STEM challenges. Students can use suggested household materials for their designs, but they can also substitute and work with materials at hand.  Great for homeschooling, distance learning, and Google Classroom.

     Students will be encouraged to ask questions, plan, look at the background information on the science behind the STEM, create, and share. These activities are great for STEM or MakerEd. Students will love these STEM activities for elementary students. Students will use Science and Engineering Practices to solve these STEM challenges.

At Home STEM Activities

As more districts have started closing, we’ve had a lot of parents and educators looking for “home STEM” distance learning ideas. Here are 13 STEM challenges for teaching STEM at home with the materials at hand.

Students at home should be encouraged to use a variety of materials that they have on hand and substitute when needed.

STEM Challenges to Do At Home

These at Home Learning STEM Activities include 13 STEM challenges. Distance learning STEM Challenges: This resource gives students the chance to do STEM challenges using materials they have at home. Students will love these 13 STEM engineering activities! Students will get background information in videos and text and will be given the challenge to design and build something with materials they have at home. Students will record ideas right on the google slides and take photos or videos of their STEM project and add it to the Google Slide to turn in.  This unit is designed in Google Slides. Students will need to have access to Google in order to use it.

     Each of the 13 STEM challenges can be completed at home with the support of the information in the Google Slides.  Great for STEM teaching or STEEM programs that are in a distance learning situation. Could also be used for homeschool or in-person learning.

STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Math and activities involving these fields have a huge impact on kids.  Even the simplest STEM activities like making a bridge provide numerous opportunities for kids to learn and explore STEM.

     It might look like your kids are just playing, but they are doing oh so much more. Look closely, you will see the design process in motion. You will see experimenting and critical thinking in action, and you will notice problem-solving at its finest.  When kids play, they learn about the world around them!

     Well, easy STEM activities can look exactly like grabbing items from the pantry, recycling bin, junk drawer, and trash, students still need some guidance so that they get the most out of these activities. They still need to be asked questions and have the math and science elements pointed out to them…otherwise, it is just a craft.

Why is STEM important?

STEM empowers individuals with the skills to succeed and adapt to this increasingly complex, changing technological world. STEM is intended to lead to innovation necessary to sustain our economy. This innovation and science literacy depends on a solid knowledge base in the STEM areas.

STEM is important because it pervades every part of our lives. Science is everywhere in the world around us and is used to impact people and every living thing on earth.

  • The 21st-century skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity are necessary to meet the demands of today’s world.
  • STEM skills help to bridge the ethnic and gender gaps sometimes found in math and science fields;
  • The global economy is changing;
  • STEM Skills and qualifications are considered essential to workforce productivity and beyond;
  • Current jobs are disappearing due to automation;
  • New jobs are emerging as an outcome of technological advances;
  • The continual advances in technology are changing the way students learn, connect and interact every day;
  • STEM Skills are critical to school success and life;
  • Employer demand for STEM qualifications and skills is high;
  • 75 percent of jobs in the fastest growing industries require workers with STEM skills;
  • STEM occupations are growing. They are nearly double that of other occupations;
  • The wage for STEM jobs is about 70% more than the national average
  • In 20 years 80% of jobs will require technical skills. (US Bureau of Statistics)
  • Who will solve the current and future dilemmas without divergent thinkers that use STEM skills to solve problems?
Let’s make sure our students are still getting to use and practice STEM skills with this STEM curriculum even during Distance Learning.

    The elephant article was excellent but I also thought the lab on dissecting a flower was broken down so easily, even telling me where to get inexpensive flowers!  This resource helped me teach this challenging standard in an engaging way.  Worth every penny!

    My students loved this unit. I was able to present different elements of it throughout the month. It is hard to find interesting non-fictional, age-appropriate text for my students that they will enjoy. This was a great unit that aligned well for my students who have very different goals within the same group.
